Dental waxes are thermoplastic moldable materials that are solids at room temperature.
Waxes are grouped into three classifications: pattern waxes, processing waxes, and impression waxes.
Manufacturers produce these waxes in several forms. Sticks, sheets, blocks, and tins are used.
PATTERN WAXES-BASEPLATE WAX Also called Modelling wax.
They are sheets of wax generally pink in color to simulate the color of the gingiva.
USES
- Occlusal or bite rims
- Spacer in custom trays.
- Pattern for plastic portion of dentures.

- Some of the consistent problems seen are—lisp on "S" sounds is caused by too narrow of an air space on the anterior portion of the palate.
- This is many times seen in a patient with a large anterior ridge, and thick area of rugae on the denture.
- The denture should be thinned to allow more air to escape.
- Whistle on "S" sounds is caused by the denture either being too thin on the anterior portion of the hard palate, or the anterior teeth being set too far forward.
- If the aesthetics are correct, wax can be added to the rugae area until the whistle stops.
- Wax can also be added to the lingual of the anterior teeth to create a larger cingulum area which also may stop this from occurring.
- Once the speech problem has been corrected the denture can be reprocessed with the additions to either area.
- "Th" and "T" sounds indistinct are often caused by the anterior teeth being set too far forward.
- "F" and "V" sounds indistinct is due to the anterior teeth being set too far lingual.
- Correction can be accomplished by removing the teeth, resetting in wax, confirm the new position, and reprocess.

A Lingual plate is a type of mandibular major connector that is used in a removable partial denture. It is a type of major connector that covers the lingual gingival tissues. It also prevents forces from being directed facially.
- The lingual plate consists of a lingual bar plus an extension over the cingula of anterior teeth.
- A linguoplate should be made as thin as is technically feasible and should be contoured to follow the contours of the teeth and the embrasures.
- Shape: convex or tear-drop on tongue side (1/2 pear shape, with thin edge toward teeth).
Indications:
- When the lingual frenum is high or the space available for a lingual bar is limited. (Available sulcus depth <8 mm)
- In Class I situations in which the residual ridges have undergone excessive vertical resorption. (Reduces horizontal rotations)
- For stabilizing periodontally weakened teeth. (Splinting)
- When the future replacement of one or more incisor teeth will be facilitated by the addition of retention loops to an existing linguoplate.
- Interrupted linguoplate in the presence of interproximal spaces.
NOTE
- When the lingual frenum is high or the space available for a lingual bar is limited.
- In either instance, the superior border of a lingual bar would have to be placed too close to the gingival tissue.
- Irritation could be avoided only by generous relief, which might be annoying to the tongue and create an undesirable food trap.
- When a clinical measurement from the free gingival margins to the slightly elevated floor of the mouth is less than 8 mm, a linguoplate is indicated in lieu of a lingual bar.
- The use of a linguoplate permits the inferior border to be placed more superiorly without tongue and gingival irritation and without compromise of rigidity.
