Micrognathia
Small jaw, affecting the mandible or maxilla
True micrognathia- A congential defect wherein there is an abnormal positioning of the jaw, or an abnormal relation of one jaw to the other
Acquired micrognathia- It is of postnatal origin, usually resulting from a disturbance in the area of the TMJ.
Important associated syndromes:
- Pierre Robin syndrome
- Down’s syndrome
- Trisomy 18
- Cri du chat syndrome
- Di George syndrome
- Treacher Colin’s syndrome
Median Rhomboid Glossitis
- Caused by defective posterior dorsal point of fusion of the lateral lingual tubercles. Presents as a rhomboid, smooth mucosa, devoid of taste buds and papillae.
- Microbial etiology associated- Candida infection, hence the name Posterior midline atrophic candidiasis
- Midline soft palate erythema is seen in the area that contacts the underlying involved surface of the tongue- Kissing lesion
