The outer circular layer is made up of :
Superior constrictor
Middle constrictor
Inferior constrictor
Gap between the superior and middle constrictors
Stylopharyngeus and glossopharyngeal nerve
Stylopharyngeus is supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
The upper fibres of palatopharyngeus from a spincter internal to superior constrictor. These fibres constitute Passavant’s muscle, which on contraction raises Passavant’s ridge on the posterior wall of nasopharynx, but remember it is present within superior constrictor.
SUPERIOR CONSTRICTOR
Origin: Pterygoid plate, pterygo mandibular raphe, and mandible
Insertion: Occipital bone and pharyngeal raphe
Action: Constricts upper part of pharynx in deglutition
Nerve supply: pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve (X)
Tensor veli palati, Levator veli palati, Muscle uvulae, palatoglossus and palatopharyngeus. All muscles of soft palate except tensor veli palati are supplied by pharyngeal plexus derived from cranial part of accessory nerve. The tensor palati is supplied by mandibular nerve
The motor supply of soft palate is derived from cranial accessory nerve and is carried via vagus nerve to effector muscles. All the muscles of soft palate are supplied by the pharyngeal plexus except tensor veli palati which is supplied by the mandibular nerve
