MEDICAL FITNESS
A candidate is deemed to be medically fit in the absence of any disease or syndrome and with sound physical and mental health, thus ensuring efficient performance of military duties irrespective of the terrain and climatic conditions.
The qualifying candidates from the interview appear for the medical test conducted by the medical board of Armed forces medical services (AFMS) to ascertain the candidate’s medical fitness as per the guidelines for commissioning.
The medical test includes:
- Eye check-up for colour-blindness, myopia, and having undergone Lasik. Colour-blindness and extreme myopia can lead to permanent rejection while recent Lasik procedures fall under temporary rejection enabling candidates to appear for the test at a later date.
- Dental health: only active lesions are looked for, hence it is advisable to check and treat for active lesions like caries and periodontal infections before appearing for the medical test.
- A surgeon then proceeds to conduct a physical fitness test and also looks for knock-knees, rigid chests, hernia and other such conditions.
- Height, weight, chest, and BP is checked along with routine blood tests. A minimum of 157.5 cms for men with a correlated weight of 49.5 kg is required while females require a minimum of 152 cms with 42 kg weight. The candidates from the northeast and hilly areas, Gorkhas, Nepalese, Assamese, and Garhwalas height requirements are relaxed by 5cms along with correlated weight.
- Pregnancy is also deemed as temporarily unfit.
The candidates successfully clearing the medical examination are qualified and meets the eligibility while those candidates who are deemed to be medically unfit by Special Medical Board (SMB), is intimidated by the president of SMB, who also details the procedure for requesting to the Appeal
Medical Board (AMB) to the candidates.
The unfit candidates have a maximum of 45 days to report to the AMB, and if found unfit is intimidated to the respective candidates with the procedure to challenge the findings of AMB. It is merely the discretion of DGAFMS, to grant the Review Medical Board ( RMB) based on the
merit of the candidate.
WHO MAKES IT TO THE MERIT LIST?
Merely qualifying the interview is not enough, marks obtained in the interview makes the basis for the candidate’s name appears in the merit list.
Commissioned candidates are granted SSC under the rank of captain and will be entitled to full pay and allowance. The candidates are also required to complete a training period of 13 weeks at AMC centre and college, Lucknow.
TENURE
SSC officer has a tenure of 5 years which is extendable by 5 and years respectively making it a total of 14 years depending on the choice of continuing, availability, and eligibility criteria. While one can also apply for the limited seats of PC on completing 2 years of service as an SSC officer, provided they have not attained 30 years for a
BDS graduate and 35 years for an MDS graduate on 31/12 of the year of application.
