The Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) system was accepted by WHO
The FDI system of tooth notation for primary teeth is as follows:
Number 5 indicates maxillary right, numeral 6 indicates maxillary left, numeral 7 indicates mandibular left and numeral 8 indicates mandibular right quadrants.
The FDI system of tooth notation for permanent teeth is as follows:
Thus in the FDI system the first digit indicates the quadrant for permanent dentition(1-4) and for primary dentition (5-8).
The second digit indicates the tooth with the quadrant 1 to 8 for permanent teeth and 1 to 5 for the primary teeth.
The number 11 should not be pronunced as eleven but should be pronounced as one – one indicating the first tooth of the upper right maxillary quadrant ie, the incisor.
